Author Biographies

Tiffany Huang

Author

Tiffany Huang is a fourth year student in the Bachelor of Media Studies and Master of Management (B+MM) program at the University of British Columbia. On top of exploring music composition, she is currently working on editing her first novel manuscript. Thus far, Tiffany’s personal projects have been largely informed by her love for art, history, and storytelling. Themes of particular interest to her include considerations of fantasy vs. reality, past vs. present, and fate vs. agency. She hopes to more deeply pursue these interests in the future with a creative career in the film and arts and culture industries.

Emma Kwok

Author

Emma Kwok is currently a third-year Bachelor of Media Studies student. She loves thinking about connections between people, stories, and culture. Thus, in her free time, she often enjoys sifting through the internet for fairy tales from around the world, watching video essays about movies and television shows, and staying up late to read books. To her, fiction is a vehicle with the remarkable capacity to reveal truths about people and society, by allowing audiences to explore reality through the imaginary. In a more literal sense, Emma also relishes exploring reality by taking long walks in the sun.

Sierra Louie

Author

Sierra Louie is a third year Media Studies student working towards a minor in creative writing. She is most invested in writing speculative fiction and poetry, with a new interest in making comics. Writing topics of choice include the familiar, the bizarre, and the few and far between. However, through Beacon, she hopes to highlight unique voices and complex subject matter, bringing attention to the topics that concern us as we learn to navigate our physical and virtual landscapes.

Maria Samper

Author

Maria Samper is a 3rd year student in the Bachelor of Media Studies program and the Bachelors + Masters of Management program from the Sauder School of Business. She is an editor of and contributor to the inaugural issue of Beacon: UBC Journal of Media Studies. Maria’s research and artistic interests center around the concept of the archive in its many forms: as a repository of personal memory, a means of storing and organizing information, and an imperial tool. She is honored to have been able to participate in this year’s issue of Beacon, and looks forward to continuing her involvement during the rest of her time at UBC.

Charlie Stewart

Author

Hi, my name is Charlie Stewart, I was born in Hong Kong to a Canadian-Italian family. Growing up in Hong Kong, I attended the Canadian International School from kindergarten to grade 12. I started filmmaking in 2010 when my brother and I made short skits and posted them onto YouTube. Since then, I have fallen in love with the art form and signed up for classes and committed to learning about my craft. Now I hope to continue improving my filmmaking abilities in Vancouver through university study with the aim of cultivating positive social change.
